The Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order (RRFSO) 2005 legally compels building owners and employers to fulfil their fire risk assessment obligations for the design of their buildings. By specifying Rockwool’s Dual Density range of non-combustible insulation for flat roofs, they meet their RRFSO and Building Regulations ADB2 requirements without compromise and with potential cost savings.
The new Rockwool publication, Built-Up Flat Roof Fire Protection, demonstrates that Rockwool’s Dual Density flat roofing insulation boards enable designers to meet the new regulations.
“It is critical that owners and employers are fully aware of the design decisions taken by designers, specifiers and contractors. Failure to do so can potentially put them at risk of criminal prosecution under the RRFSO,” warns Andrew Dunn, Flat Roof Business Unit Manager.
“Rockwool Dual Density flat roofing boards offer peace of mind by eliminating the need to install a costly additional fire-resistant ceiling which is required if using combustible materials including plastic foam insulation*.”
Under the RRFSO, designers and specifiers must communicate the use of combustible insulation materials and the associated risks to the building owner and developers.
Building owners and developers should insist on the specification of non-combustible materials in ceilings and compartment walls at the critical design phases, otherwise expensive retrofitting of fire-resistant measures may be required.
Andrew Dunn continues: “The design should also take into account the changes that may be made to building compartments in the future. However, this is impossible to assess, so the use of non-combustible insulation and fire-resistant roof constructions is a sure way to guarantee future-proof design.
“Only LPS 1181 Part 1 Ext A is evidence of fire-resistance. Ext B is not a fire resistance test and so does not meet the requirements of the insurer’s ‘Protected Zone’.
“As far as we are aware, Rockwool is the only insulation manufacturer that meets these requirements with the Dual Density flat roofing boards.”
Most insurers favour the use of non-combustible insulation materials to meet RRFSO and ADB2 requirements, and Rockwool Dual Density flat roofing boards are fully compliant with the Loss Prevention Council Red Book and Design Guide for Fire Protection of Buildings. These publications are the basis for assessing building fire risk, and building owners and user /employers seeking insurance should ensure all their building materials are compliant, to reduce insurance costs (or even refusal of insurance cover, which could prevent business operations).
By requesting a copy of Rockwool’s free guide Built-Up Flat Roof Fire Protection, building owners and employers can find the solutions to their RRFSO obligations and remain in compliance with all current regulations.
